Guilty Pleasure: Digimon

Everyone of us has at least one "guilty pleasure", a secret joice you are too ashamed of to actually talk about. Well, here is mine. This often as childish and boring described japanese series was my first anime EVER. Loving this kind of show resulted in the fact that I easily get addicted to shows like this, even nowadays.

Back in 2001, when the first season of "Digimon (Adventure)" started, I didn't even had a CLUE about Animes, I didn't even know that "Heidi" or "Ohayō! Supanku" were one of them. I fell in love with the art of drawing, the storytelling, the superb score (good music is the key to magic) and the great plot! Yes, it was great. Maybe not deep, but it was great and entertaining as hell. I absolutely loved it and watched this season a hundred times since then. It never gets boring if you love it like I did and always will. ^_^

The best about season one were the great Seadramon, its ultimate form Metalseadramon, Garudamon and Angemon, the Angel. I've always been keen on the Nessie myth and Seadramon reminded me of this beloved lake monster. His ultimate evolution , Metalseadramonm, became one of my favorite Digimon of all time. (Right, the plural form is not DigimonS, it's Digimon. Digital Monsters. Please keep that in mind. ^^) I think it was just a creative idea to make Nessie look like a mechanic creature that actually has no problem to swim and dive through seas and lakes. Garudamon on the other hand evolved because of her will to survive and the heart of Sora, her human passenger. It inspired me and made my heart melt. Angemon on the other hand resembled pure power and undestroyable magic coming from heaven. It was just beautiful to watch when he showed up to rescue the humans from evil.

I love Season One. It was the best season of Digimon and will forever be. None of the seasons that followed came close to the magic of season one, but I liked almost all of them. It's Digimon, you know? :)

Season Two, or: "Digimon Adventure Zero Two", was great. I wasn't keen on the new digivolution mode and was happy that the old evolution mode came back after a while. But still, this season didn't really FLASH me and I wasn't really addicted to it. I didn't love the way they ended it and the last two episodes were kinda torture. Who wanted to see all digivolutions in a row... twice? It was nothing but useless and time-consuming. Still, the season had its moments (Sylphimon was my favourite, a fusion of Aquilamon and Gatomon) and was nice to watch.

Season Three, or "Digimon Tamers", was my second favorite. It had a nice and entirely new concept that reminded me of a TCG (Trading Card Game) just like Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh, but this time even better. The way this new method was put into the story was just mind blowing. For the first (and only) time ever, humans had to use cards to make their digimon evolve to a higher level or become stronger. They created a new insert song (background music that is used in a special moment, like evolution or the use of power-ups) for both the evolution and card using method. I think the drawing was better than it was back in season two, but still, it couldn't surpass the magic of season one. My favorite was Maringeangemon.

Season Four, or "Digimon Frontier" was just not my cup of tea. All I can say is that it reminded me of Power Rangers, because humans evolved into digital monsters, and I simply hated that. It was the only season I didn't watch from start to finish, because it annoyed me at some point. I had almost no favorites, the story was cheap and the drawing became even worse after it was certain that this season should end earlier than the previous ones. The only good thing about this season was the music.

Season Five, or "Digimon Savers" / "Digimon Data Squad" was my favorite after season 1 and 3. I loved the more mature look of the characters (they almost looked like young adults), the "back-to-the-roots" evolution system and the inspiring music that just got better and better. I had a lot of favorites, just like Shinegreymon Burst Mode, Gaomon and his entire evolution family, Merukimon, Yattagaramon and Ravemon. This season was full of moments that I will never forget, for example the final battle against Belphemon or the bio hybrids. I loved this season!

Season Six, or "Digimon Xros Wars" (picture on the right), is one of two seasons that I haven't watched already. It is one of the newest seasons and premiered in 2010, with an entirely new evolution system and the digimon looking like animal transformers (holy...). I'm about to order this season via ebay and should be able to review it in early 2012. Season Seven, or "Digimon Xros Wars II: Time Traveling Hunter Boys" (picture on the left) is the sequel to "Digimon Xros Wars" and premiered right after the end of season six in October 2011. It is still running and I will not be able to watch it unless I've watched season six. But I'm convinced that both seasons won't be as great as I want them to be...

Breaking News: Beavis & Butt-Head to return to German TV

Yay! The two most loveable idiots on earth return to German TV in April/May 2012 with BRAND NEW EPISODES! As promiflash.de reports, the show will not only be broadcasted by pay-TV channel MTV in April, but also by VIVA in May.

Disney, WE WANT 2D animation!

I just watched Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" and thought of the last most outstanding Disney movie that was actually not one of those 3D desasters. "The Princess & The Frog" (2009) was just okay... and "Brother Bear" (2002) just another try to keep 2D animation alive. The last really good 2D Disney was "Tarzan" (1999) in my opinion. Back then, you could really feel the emotions through the drawn characters, the magic of the storytelling and the songs that delivered a message to the interested audience. I'm so fed up with all those modern 3D-movies without soul, I want the purely hand-drawn 2D animation back! Not that I hate CGI-animation, but I guess that almost 80% of the current productions are created without soul and heart.

I'm so sad that Disney decided to cancel their plans for "The Snow Queen" (draft above), just because the "Cinderella" resemblance was too big. I don't get it, but I seriously don't have to. There are things in this world I just don't have to understand, otherwise it would drive me nuts. But still, I don't get it... Why did they come up with an idea they wouldn't implement anyway?

Same goes with Terry Pratchett's "Mort", "The Grim Reaper". Ron Clements & John Musker wanted to do this so bad, but Disney couldn't afford to secure the rights of the "prototype". Another thing I don't get If they really wanted it to happen...

Still, hope dies last, so we should wait and see. Maybe Disney will find its way back to the magic of 2D animation (after this year's "Winnie The Pooh", which I honestly don't want to watch - just not my cup of tea and a bit too childish for my taste). Till then, we HAVE to rely on 3D animations to get better and wait for magical 2D animations to return... and watch classical disney movies from a different time on DVD & Blu-Ray. Oh, I forgot the cinema revivals *sigh*...

"The Voice" vs. "The X Factor"

There are billions of reality shows nowadays, many of them just what we would define as „boring, uninspired and outdated”. But are the ones mentioned above the same? Do they differ? If so, which one will sustain on a longer period?

“The Voice” was the most highly anticipated and new reality show of 2010 in Netherlands, where it gained almost 54% of the target viewers. The show was then sold to many countries, i.e. the U.S.A., where its first season aired in spring ’11 on NBC. The success of the show, with Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton as judges, resulted in great news: “The Voice (US)” was renewed for a second season, airing spring ’12 with even more to come! The success continued to spread around the globe and is continuing to outsell many already outdated reality shows. In Germany for example, the first Blind Auditions (October 2011) gained more viewers than the entertaining show “Das Supertalent” (Germany’s version of “Britain’s Got Talent”) which is airing since 2007.

“The X Factor” originally started in Britain ‘2004 and is the most successful singing competition ever since. With Simon Cowell as the head of the production team (SYCOtv), the show slightly reminds of UK’s “Pop Idol” of 2001 but has not only changed in terms of corporate design, but also in terms of age limits. Since then, this show has found its spot all around the globe and is successful still.

Those two singing competitions are not the same, not even close. The list of differences is really big, but here are the (for me) most recognizable differences of "The Voice" and "The X Factor".

Whereas hopefuls on “The X Factor” are judged on their “special something”, which not only includes their vocal ability, “The Voice” on the other hand judges talented people based ENTIRELY on their voice. In the first auditions, the so-called “Blind Auditions”, talented people try to win the vote of the judges with their voice (the specific coach needs to press the “I WANT YOU” button to turn his seat around and in order to have a chance of winning the talented person for his team). The performance will only be judged in the following rounds, where acts from the same group fight for survival in the battle rounds (but the voice still matters in a bigger sense). On “The X Factor”, voice AND performance matters, cause the judges are looking for the “special something”, the “indescribable talent” that lies within many hopefuls who are trying to win the competition. Whereas coaches on “The Voice” decide for themselves, which kind of artists they want in their team, coaches on “The X Factor” don’t have a choice either and their categories are picked from the production team.

I personally prefer “The Voice” over “The X Factor”, not only because of the rules, but mainly because of the bigger scale of talent, reduced trash and zero public humiliation. 17-year old wannabes like Germany’s Pietro Lombardi (winner of last season’s “DSDS”, German Idol), who only wins a competition because teenage girls are falling for him, would not even stand a chance in a show like “The Voice”. The talent is more versatile and differs in a much bigger sense, the pressure lies entirely on the vocal performance and almost EVERYONE can audition for this show. No matter how old you are, no matter where you are coming from: if your voice is something special, it all doesn’t matter in the end.

I honestly think that “The X Factor” will be outdated at some point. Not only based on ratings, but also in terms of talent. I hope that almost EVERYONE considers auditioning for “The Voice” and ignores this crappy version of a singing competition. Trash like this should be outdated already.

Queen feat. Adam Lambert - Greatest Hits Medley

Es war die Performance des Abends als die legendäre Rockband QUEEN zusammen mit Adam Lambert ihre größten Hits aller Zeiten bei den diesjährigen European Music Awards (MTV) performte.

In Gedenken an ihren an AIDS verstorbenen Frontmann FREDDIE MERCURY performte die Band mit einer unglaublichen Gewalt zeitlose Meisterstücke aus ihrer Vergangenheit, zusammen mit einem der größten Sänger der Gegenwart. Die Performance befand sich nicht bloß musikalisch und stimmlich auf höchstem Level, sie stellte auch alle Darbietungen des Abends mühelos in den Schatten. Ein Moment, der möglicherweise in die Geschichte eingehen wird und sowohl QUEEN als auch ADAM LAMBERT bis ans Ende der Zeit begleiten wird. Diese Performance hat sehr eindrucksvoll bewiesen, dass es in der Tat möglich ist, die Vergangenheit mit der Gegenwart zu verbinden und Zeit zu einem irrelevanten Faktor unseres Lebens zu machen. Denn diese Performance war in der Tat zeitlos und wird auch noch in 50 Jahren eindrucksvoll erscheinen.

Gespielt wurde ein Medley aus den Songs "The Show Must Go On", "We Will Rock You" und "We Are The Champions". Doch nun genug der Worte, genießt den Auftritt und lasst euch von musikalischer Gewalt beeindrucken, wie sie es selten zu hören, fühlen und zu sehen gibt.

Wusstest du schon?
ADAM LAMBERT hat bereits im Finale von American Idol (Staffel 8, 2008) mit QUEEN performt. Schon zu diesem Zeitpunkt wurde gemunkelt, dass er eventuell als neuer Frontmann der Band fungieren könnte. Jetzt, einige Jahre später, kam es endlich zu dem Moment, auf den Fans beider Acts gewartet haben!

Was bedeutet das Redesign für den Blog?

Da sich der Blog nun auf gewisse Bereiche spezialisiert, ist es wichtig, den Anfangspost neu aufzusetzen und die Besucher über kommende Neuerungen aufzuklären.

Ab sofort behandelt dieser Blog nur noch Musik des Rock/Pop Genres sowie Horrorfilme. Dabei können sehr wohl kurze Ausflüge in andere Themenbereiche stattfinden, die jedoch beschränkt und festgelegt sind (Cartoons / Animes).

So wird es als kurzen Themenausflug von Zeit zu Zeit kleine Reviews über die zwei Lachnummern Beavis & Butt-Head geben, da die erste Rezension sehr viele Hits hatte und die Nachfrage etwas gewachsen ist.

Hauptsächlich werdet ihr aber nun wöchentlich neue Rezensionen über entweder ältere oder neuere Horrorfilme lesen können, sowie Kritiken zu CD Veröffentlichungen der aufgeführten Genres.

Den Anfang der Horrorreviews macht "Scream 4", der nunmehr vierte Teil der Slasherreihe unter der Regie von Wes Craven. Die Review wird im Laufe der Woche veröffentlicht, dicht gefolgt von einer CD Kritik über das neue Album von Kelly Clarkson, Stronger sowie die Cartoonreviews über die neuen Beavis & Butt-Head Episoden.

Außerdem werden sowohl das WTC Quiz als auch unregelmäßige Blogeinträge zu persönlich favorisierten Musikstücken weiterhin Bestandteil des Blogs bleiben.

Ich hoffe, das nun beschränkte Blogthema kann euch überzeugen und lädt weitere Besucher zum lesen auf der Seite ein. :)

Review: "American Horror Story"

Mit der FX Serie “American Horror Story” kehrt endlich das Horror Genre ins Fernsehen zurück. Die langerwartete Serie wurde bereits Monate vor dem Start im amerikanischen Fernsehen als „Revival des TV Horrors“ angepriesen und durch einen immensen Hype angekündigt. Seit Anfang Oktober läuft die erste Staffel der Horrorserie in Amerika (FX) und wird am 9. November auf dem Pay-TV Sender FOX deutschlandweit Premiere feiern (Mittwochs, 21.45 Uhr).

Zentrales Thema der Serie ist das zerrüttete Familienverhältnis der Harmons und ihr Einzug in ein mysteriöses Haus, das von seltsamen Geschehnissen geprägt ist. Der Grund für den Umzug der Hamons ist ein Ehebruch, der die Familie in einen unglaublich tiefen Abgrund gestürzt hat. Nachdem Familienvater und Psychotherapeut Ben (Dylan McDermott) seine Frau Vivien (Connie Britton) mit einer Studentin betrogen hat, wollen Beide zusammen mit Tochter Violet (Taissa Farmiga) ein neues Leben beginnen und ziehen in ein verlassenes Haus, das böse Geheimnisse birgt. Dies ist auch der Grund für den niedrigen Preis des Anwesens, doch dies schreckt Familie Harmon nicht davon ab, das Haus zu kaufen und den Neustart weiterhin an diesem Ort anzustreben. Wie sich herausstellt ist dies keine gute Idee. Schon bald begegnen der Familie merkwürdige Gestalten, wie z.B. Hausmädchen Moira (Frances Conroy/ Alexandra Beckenridge), die sich Vivien als alte Dame und ihrem Mann als verführerische Frau zeigt, oder Bens Patient Tate (Evan Peters), der genau wie die Nachbarin Constance (Jessica Lange), ihre Tochter Adalaide (Jamie Brewer) und der ehemalige Hausbesitzer Larry (Denis O’Hare) eine Vorgeschichte haben, die eng mit dem mysteriösen Haus in Verbindung stehen.

Doch erfinden hier die Macher der Serie (Ryan Murphy/ Brad Falchuk) das Horrorgenre neu oder wirkt dies eher wie ein lauwarmer Aufguss längst veralteter Gruselfilme? Weder noch. „American Horror Story“ ist mehr als nur ein Gruselfilm und hat auch weitaus mehr Tiefe als die meisten Serien der Neuzeit. Mag die Pilotepisode noch so vollgepackt und verwirrend, „over the top“ und ziemlich abgedreht sein, so entwickelt sich die Serie mit der Zeit zu einem interessanten Pendant zu sonstigen „möchtegern-Schockerreihen“, die mehr versprechen, als sie tatsächlich hergeben.

Die Serie bietet eine unglaubliche Tiefe, die sich nicht bloß auf die Handlung beschränkt, sondern auch auf alle denkbaren Filmelemente ausdehnt. Der Grund für diese Tiefe liegt zweifelsohne am gut durchdachten Drehbruch und den erstklassigen Schauspielern. Ryan Murphy scheint ohnehin ein Händchen für Talent zu haben, denn bereits mit „Nip/Tuck – Schönheit hat ihren Preis“ und „Glee“ bewies der US-amerikanische Regisseur eine erstklassige Umsetzungsgewalt und hat beiden Serien zum Ruhm verholfen. Ob ihm dies mit dieser Serie auch gelingt? Der Startschuss verlief zumindest erfolgreich, denn die Serie hat den besten Serienstart aller Zeiten auf dem Sender FX hingelegt und wurde bereits um eine zweite Staffel verlängert.

Die Schauspieler der Serie sind nahezu die wichtigsten Handlungsträger von „American Horror Story“. Kein größeres Augenmerk liegt auf den emotionsgeladenen Diskussionen von Ben und Vivien, der sehr charakterstarken Persönlichkeit von Constance oder der angsteinflößenden Darstellung von Tate. Alle Charaktere haben ihre Daseinsberechtigung, es wird keine Zeit verschwendet und die Dramaturgie erreicht sehr oft einen unverwechselbaren Höhepunkt. Unerwartete Twists im Plot tun ihr Übriges.

Musiktechnisch bedient sich die Serie auch gern an Soundtracks bereits erfolgreich veröffentlichter Grusel/Psychofilme wie Alfred Hitchcocks "PSYCHO“ (1960) oder „SAW“ (2004). Da die Musikstücke jedoch perfekt dosiert eingesetzt werden, tut dies der Authentizität der Serie keinen Abbruch, im Gegenteil. Eine adäquate Neuverwendung dieser legendären Musikstücke macht die Serie zu einem unverwechselbaren Genuss.

Fazit:
Die Serie gehört zu den „MUST-SEE“ Kandidaten der Serienneuheiten 2011. Ein Horrorfan kommt an der Serie ohnehin nicht vorbei, andere Zuschauer werden wohl durch die ständig auftauchenden Twists (in Insiderkreisen auch „Brainfucks“) angezogen. Wer auf Serien mit enormer Tiefe, starken Charakteren und einer sehr beeindruckenden Atmosphäre steht, der sollte „American Horror Story“ eine Chance geben (und damit meine ich nicht nach 2 Episoden die Flinte ins Korn werfen). Wie jede gute Serie benötigt auch AHC seine Zeit, um auf Höchstform aufzulaufen, aber die Geduld macht sich bezahlt.
